The Non-Lucrative Visa: An Option for Filipinos Wanting to Migrate to Spain

Many Filipinos dream of migrating to Europe for a chance at a better life. Spain in particular is a popular destination, known for its warm climate, laidback lifestyle, and strong economy. For those looking to make the move to Spain, the country offers a type of long-stay visa called the non-lucrative visa.

What is the non-lucrative visa? It allows individuals to legally reside in Spain without needing to work or do business there. The main requirement is having enough financial means to support yourself while living in the country. It’s also known as a retiree’s visa. For Filipinos who meet this requirement, the non-lucrative visa presents an excellent opportunity to establish yourself in Spain.

In order to qualify for the non-lucrative visa as a Filipino citizen, you must:

  • Prove you have a monthly income of at least €2400 plus €510 per additional dependent.
  • Have comprehensive private health insurance coverage with a company based in Spain.
  • Provide a clean criminal record from both Spain and the Philippines.
  • Pay the current non-lucrative visa application fee.

The application process involves submitting all required documents including proof of income/funds, health insurance, criminal background checks, and more to the Spanish consulate in Manila. Processing times can take around 2 to 3 months upon submission of complete documents so it’s best to apply well in advance of your planned relocation to Spain.

Once approved, the initial non-lucrative visa is valid for 1 year. During this time you can legally live in Spain but you cannot work (obtain income from Spanish residents or companies). You must maintain your financial means and extend your health insurance policy to stay compliant with the visa requirements.

After the first year is up, you can apply to renew the visa annually provided you still meet the income and health insurance requirements. After 2 years of legal residence in Spain with the non-lucrative visa, a Filipino becomes eligible to apply for Spanish citizenship.

There are several benefits that come with moving to Spain under the non-lucrative visa:

  • You get to experience life in Spain without needing a work visa first.
  • It gives you time to establish yourself in the country and prepare for potential long-term residency.
  • It’s a great option if you have passive income like pensions or savings to live off.
  • You can immerse yourself in Spain’s famously high quality of life, rich culture, cuisine, and much more.
